Look Up was very pleased to be given the opportunity to speak at the NAMSA global teamworking event in Leeds recently. I ran a workshop called Good Communications Builds Relationships to around 30 people from all over the world. It was interesting presenting on communications, in English, to many people who did not have English as a first language.
We discussed and analysed why communications can go wrong and the consequences to organisations when it does. I involved everyone in the process, running exercises, getting large and small group discussions on a range of issues relating to how they communicated within their business. We discussed the impact of our message and how it is affected by the medium we use to communicate. People often hide behind emails and fail to be persuasive or influential as a result.
We worked on ideas of how to improve our communication and influence by using listening skills to make sure we receive the whole message. At the end of the session, all the participants were invited to commit to one or two changes that they would make as a result of the workshop.
I was pleased that everyone fully engaged on the day, new relationships were started and old ones reinforced and I had some wonderful feedback after the event.
I was invited to stay after lunch and was treated to a video of the wonderful Janette Benaddi, one of the Yorkshire Rows, that told the story of their epic crossing of the Atlantic by rowing boat, becoming the oldest all female crew to ever cross an ocean with an average age of 47. Truly inspirational!
